This disorder originates from an incorrectly closed spinal column, most frequently in the lumbar part. It causes partial to total paralysis of the lower limbs and sphincter paralysis. The intellect of the child is usually not affected by a cleft spine. However, the self-concept and emotional experience of the child may be affected negatively, in particular in relation to the inability to control urination and defecation. Thanks to timely screening of developmental disorders, the number of children born with this abnormality has been decreasing.
