Strategies to Promote Effective Communication

Parents of children with SEN are often greatly concerned about the day-to-day successes of their child. They are therefore often relieved to hear about small, but regularly recurring steps in the right direction. For this reason teachers should make use of casual and informal occasions to talk with family members.

Discussions during the arrival and departure of children from the school

The daily schedule of a kindergarten’s activities should allow space for opportunities to introduce family members with daily activities and achievements and to bring up various school events. This supports mutual communication among parents, allows parents to ask teachers questions, request a meeting, play with their children or read to a group of children. This is however not an appropriate time to discuss problems, because of the other children and parents present.

Notice boards and school websites

Notice boards are used to inform parents about activities being prepared by the school. They may also be used to provide further information, for instance records from meetings or articles on childhood development problems. The notice boards may be used to display children’s artwork, highlights from outings or photographs of the children’s family members.

Notice boards and websites alike may represent pro-inclusive themes and quotes, such as (Drdulová, 2014): Let’s think beyond barriers. Everyone is welcome here. Children like me and you. Everyone is different, but we’re all equal. Diversity enriches us, tolerance brings us together. Together we can do more.
