Activities for the Development of Gross Motor Skills

The development of gross motor skills to a large extent depends on muscle training. Children gain strength and resilience through practice and repetitive activities which are similar to gymnastics. Some games are listed below. 

  • Marching in a straight line (3–6 years).
  • Skipping, jumping over ropes which are put on the ground (4–6 years).
  • Playing with a ball (3–6 years).
  • Shooting games – when the child has a particular target (they improve the ability to estimate distance and physical strength when throwing an object (4–6 years).
  • Stepping in and out of a hoop (4–6 years).
  • Games with cones – the child can walk, run or ride a bicycle around the cones (5–6 years).
  • Swimming (4–6 years).
  • A “shadowing” (imitation) game – the child makes the same movements and actions that others show them (3–6 years).
  • Imitation of animals – slither like a snake, walk like a duck, hop like a rabbit, gallop like a horse (3–5 years).
  • Walking on a beam or a thin line (5–6 years).
  • Juggling (5–6 years).
  • Hopscotch (4–6 years).
